Malaria Cases Prompt Mosquito Alert in Manatee and Sarasota Counties

SARASOTA -- The Florida Department of Health is urging Sarasota and Manatee county residents to cover up and use bug spray. It's posted a mosquito-borne illness alert, after two cases of malaria.

The first case appeared May 26th. That individual has been treated and has recovered. Since then, another case has appeared.

FDOH says residents should wear long sleeves and pants/trousers, use insect repellent and avoid areas with high mosquito populations. It also recommends draining any standing water, including garbage cans, flower pots, and birdbaths, and urges repairing broken screen windows and doors.
