Palm Beach County's sheriff recently said this...
"You know, if there was any doubt in anybody's mind...put that out of your mind. I am going to run."
And this week, Ric Bradshaw made it official, launching his re-election bid for a sixth term.
"I still believe that I'm the best qualified candidate to run this organization. Obviously the public, after five different elections, has pretty much decided that 'Yes, you're the guy that's been keeping us safe.'"
He's already the longest-serving sheriff in Palm Beach County history, in March surpassing Richard Wille who served 18 years from 1976 to 1995. But Bradshaw says it's not about breaking records.
"I get up in the morning and the first thing on my mind is are we doing the best we can do to keep people safe. I can't retire and just sit, I can only play golf and go fishing so much. I've been doing this for 52 years. This is who I am. This is what I want to do."
The sheriff will run in a Democrat primary in 2024, where he already has at least one challenger, Alex Freeman, a former Riviera Beach Police major.
One Republican in the race is Bradshaw's former chief deputy Michael Gauger, who retired two years ago after serving as the sheriff's second-in-command for 16 years. He'll face former PBSO captain Lauro Diaz in a primary.
