No Parole for "Bone Valley" Convict Leo Schofield

TALLAHASSEE -- Leo Schofield, a Lakeland man who maintains his innocence more than three decades after he was convicted of murdering his wife, isn't getting parole. But a decision made today by the state board that oversees paroles may bring him closer to a release.

The board voted to transfer Schofield from the Hardee Correctional Institution to Everglades Correctional near Miami, where he'll participate in a program designed to update skills for inmates who've been imprisoned for decades. He'll get another interview next March with another parole hearing in June of 2024.

Schofield and his supporters maintain that Michelle Saum Schofield's killer is a man named Jeremy Scott, who's tied to several killings and has admitted to killing the 18-year-old in 1987. Scott's fingerprints were found on her car but not identified until 2004.

Schofield's case has gotten a lot of attention because of a podcast dedicated to reviewing the evidence: "Bone Valley," co-created by investigative reporter Gilbert King and researcher Kelcey Decker.
