Governor DeSantis has signed into law a bill aimed at curbing antisemitic incidents which have been on the rise across the state.
Palm Beach County State Rep. Mike Caruso introduced the "Public Nuisances" bill earlier this year after someone projected swastikas onto buildings in West Palm Beach and Jacksonville.
That is now a crime. It'll be a misdemeanor that becomes a felony if the image projected contains a "credible threat." Palm Beach County now has a projection ordinance in place as well.
Caruso's legislation will also make it illegal to throw hateful flyers onto private property and to harrass someone based on what they are wearing if that person is displaying something related to any religious or ethnic heritage.
The Republican lawmaker flew to Israel with fellow Representative Randy Fine of Brevard County, who tweeted Thursday that it was a "secret trip" to deliver the bill to the governor. Fine calls it the "strongest antisemitism bill in the United States."
The law goes into effect immediately.
The governor is in Jerusalem, where he delivered the keynote address at an event. He called Israel a "valued and trusted ally."
The trip to Israel comes after the governor spent time in Japan and South Korea. He will wrap up his overseas trip with a stop in the United Kingdom.
