Key West, FL - A man from Louisiana has been charged with hit-and-run and attempting to escape from custody after causing a destructive crash in South Florida while under the influence.
Police say Bailey Richard has been charged with multiple offenses after causing a hit-and-run crash in Key West, destroying several traffic lights in the process.
The Key West Police Department arrived at the scene of the crash to find Richard walking away from a wrecked Toyota Corolla with Louisiana tags.
Officers found crushed amphetamine pills and drug paraphernalia inside of the vehicle.
Police also discovered a number of fake Louisiana identification cards in Richard’s glove box. When asked about the IDs, Richard allegedly told officers, “I’m trying to do business."
Richard appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center for evaluation.
While being treated at the hospital, Richard managed to escape custody and ran towards a locked glass door, bolting through the glass and making it into the hospital’s parking lot before officers tackled and cuffed him.
Police say Richard suffered “several lacerations as he ran through the broken glass.”
Richards was arrested on four felony charges and two misdemeanors, including hit-and-run, possession of fake identification cards, attempted escape from custody, and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.
He is set to be arraigned in Monroe County court on April 13th.
