Florida's lieutenant governor wants to clear up what she says is a misperception about the new law stripping Disney World of its self-governing power.
In addition to giving Gov. DeSantis the ability to appoint the members of the governing board, it also renamed Reedy Creek to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.
Jeanette Nunez says false information has been spreading about this.
"It will ensure that there is no burden to the taxpayer. That's something again that the Left tried to proliferate on social media. It was going to create a situation where Central Florida residents were going to pay an inordinate amount of taxes. It will ensure that doesn't happen."
DeSantis proposed the change after Disney's then-CEO Bob Chapek spoke out against the Parental Rights in Education law, vowing to fight against what he and other critics called the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
Nunez says more to come.
"There is a lot of concern with the corporate activism, not just in Disney's case but the Governor has talked about ESG and some of the other things that we're going to be tackling this session so stay tuned. There's going to be a lot more of that coming down the pike."
The Lieutenant Governor also wants to set the record straight about news reports that claim classroom book shelves are empty due to state law.
"Those that claim that we're banning books are being intellectual dishonest and I think, quite frankly, purposefully manipulative."
She says state leadership wants Florida's kids to read and have the highest level of rigor in their curriculum.
"What we're doing is making sure that there's no pornographic material in books for second graders...that there's no graphic content for our five-year-olds."
A new bill filed ahead of this year's Legislative session which gets underway next week in Tallahassee would expand upon the prohibition of classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity.
