Masks On As Miami-Dade Students Return To Classrooms

For the first time in 18 months, all approximately 350,000 students are back in classrooms in Miami-Dade County.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho says his commitment is keeping classrooms open, and for now that includes making sure everyone is masked with just medical exemptions.

He says they will have a meeting Wednesday with Health Department officials, "by Friday we will look at the criteria, health conditions in the community, and as soon as we possibly can, we will relax the protocols."

He says the situation will be reviewed weekly.

Carvalho believes the district, the Governor and Education Commissioner will be able to find a solution over the school board's decision not to allow a parental opt-out, but if the state withholds funding he'll accept it.
