Broward School Board Meeting Today On Mask Mandate

The first school bells ring in a little more than a week in Broward County, and today district officials are having a special meeting to deal with masks.

Broward school board members are reconsidering the district's reopening plans approved late last month, which included mask mandates.

Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco says the state requiring parental opt-outs for any district that requires student masks would be a logistical nightmare for teachers.

"We don't need an ongoing battle of put your mask on, put your mask, you know, up. Mandate it until we're safe, and revisit it in a couple months if the numbers go down."

Fusco does expect the board members to stick to their guns; "they're going to put in their rational and the data and the science and other guidelines to backup their decision."

Miami-Dade school board members are expected to address their district's COVID protocols - including student masking - next Wednesday.

The first day of school in Miami-Dade is the 23rd. It's next Wednesday in Broward.
