Miami-Dade community leaders are making another plea to residents to get a COVID-19 shot.
Before rolling up her sleeve for a second time, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava says, "For many of us, today truly is our liberation day."
Pastor Alphonso Jackson Sr. joined her and other South Florida faith leaders to say the shots' side effects shouldn't scare away residents.
"Don't listen to fear tactics. I know about the Tuskegee Experiment. I know that for years they felt that we were guinea pigs, but listen, this is life or death."
Miami-Dade is leading the state in vaccinations, with nearly 80% of seniors and more than one million residents overall, having received at least one dose.
While serious, Levine Cava stresses, the side effects reported with the Johnson &Johnson vaccine are very rare, plus only Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are being offered in the county right now.
Jackson Health System is now expanding its vaccination program to include out-of-state and international college students.
