Florida News That Impact You – March 8th, 2021

Florida's new COVID case count continued to drop through the weekend with only 4,098 new cases reported by the Florida Department of Health on Sunday. The weekly trend for daily cases has dropped to 5,100.

In related news, over 3.5 million vaccinations have now taken place in Florida, as Florida completed its best week for vaccinations last week. 1.6 million Floridians have been vaccinated with a first dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine and are awaiting a second dose. While, 1.93 million have completed the two-dose schedule and 8,076 Floridians had been vaccinated with the one dose J&J vaccine as of Sunday’s vaccine report.

Governor DeSantis provided additional guidance regarding expanded vaccine availability. He said when availability is expanded which could happen as soon as next week, the age will likely be dropped to all Floridians 60 and older, followed by those 55 and older the following week.

Lastly, Florida’s unemployment rate was revised down from 6.1% to 5.1% entering 2021 based on last week’s revised employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Florida has the lowest unemployment rate of any large state in the country and ended 2020 with an unemployment rate which was 1.6% below the national average.
