Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers will become the first team to play the Super Bowl in their Home stadium after the Bucs beat the Packers in the NFC Championship game. They’ll play the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. It’s Tampa’s first trip to the Super Bowl since their win over Oakland in 2003.
In other news, Florida’s coronavirus trends continued to improve through the weekend. With 9,500 new COVID-19 cases reported on Sunday, the seven-day trend for new cases improved for the 13th consecutive day. Florida’s weekly average for new cases remains the lowest since December 31st.
Nearly 1.4 million Floridians have been vaccinated as of Sunday. This includes 1,224,188 people who’ve received a first dose and 155,314 Floridians who’ve completed the two-dose schedule. The state expressed concern that future vaccine shipments to our state may not reach the levels we’ve experienced through the first three weeks of the year.
Florida’s unemployment rate improved in December to 6.1%, compared to 6.7% nationally. This continues the trend of outperformance by our economy during the pandemic. 18,000 fewer Floridians were out of work in December. Governor DeSantis reiterated the end of lockdown policies as a key to Florida’s relative success.
