The event is to benefit a woman who is suffering from cancer.
Kelly Wilcox was once a Prima ballerina for the Los Angeles Ballet, as well as a choreographer. These days she has cancer of the esophagus and medical bills that are piling up.
Enter the owner of several local Midas franchises in South Florida, who s hosting a performance by "Hot Rod" on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will also be a Blood mobile for blood donations and giveaways.
Food trucks will be onsite with "gratis grub" available to Midas customers and those who donate blood.
Customers who get an oil change will contribute with a $20 donation from the cost of the service going to the Wilcox family, along with 10% of all proceeds on Saturday.
CDC guidelines with social distancing will be followed and masks are required.
It's all happening at the Midas located at 2253 North Military Trail in West Palm Beach.
Background:
Kelly Wilcox led a life that dreams are made of. The daughter of a prominent TV personality, Paul Wilcox, a Prima ballerina for the Los Angeles Ballet and a choreographer. Until disaster struck. A fall from scaffolding while choreographing a show left her with a broken neck. But this didn’t stop her. She worked her way up to Executive Head of Security for Continental Airlines. But Continental Airlines declared bankruptcy and gave Kelly a "forced retirement". After 20 years of paying health insurance, the company, and the payments, vanished.
At a party in 2019, she suddenly found she couldn’t swallow. Doctors told Kelly that she had cancer of the esophagus, that had closed off the ability to eat food, or even drink water. They removed part of Kelly's esophagus and two thirds of her stomach.
She has around 250 stitches. The chemotherapy and the radiation were not successful. She now has to go through more aggressive therapy.
Doctors want to open her up again but we are hoping that with care and the right foods we can get her healthy enough for more therapy without further operations.Kelly has now refused drugs for pain, and for nausea, and is determined to continue, drug free. So far the bills amount to over $400,000.00 and our savings have gone to pay the deposit on these procedures. Hospitals and doctors have been very generous, and in many cases reduced their fees, but even with that, bills add up, even for things like electricity food and housing. There is no negotiating these costs.
“At this point, friends and neighbors have helped them survive. They now need more friends.” So says Ron Katz, owner of Midas of West Palm, Midas of Margate, Midas of Cutler Bay and Midas of Cocoa.
