School Board & Teachers Union To Hold Workshop On Teacher Options

The Palm Beach County School Board is holding a workshop Wednesday with the Classroom Teachers Association as the union looks into what types of options there will be for teachers once school campuses reopen.

While no date is known, the school board has approved a plan to allow parents the choice of sending kids to school for in-person instruction one week after the county enters Phase 2 of reopening.

According to an agenda for the workshop, they'll discuss the types of leave and accommodations that are available to employees.

CTA president Justin Katz has been critical of what that policy might be. According to Katz, surveys have been sent to principals and teachers in the district asking what option they will take when schools re-open. Those options include whether to return to school or take a leave of absence. Katz says there wasn't an option for remote learning.

The union president says he wants to make sure teachers with a legitimate doctor verified medical condition aren't forced to be around large groups of people.

Giving teachers an option has been echoed by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Katz wrote a letter to district leaders last Friday, saying educators have been "lied to" and "deceived" when it comes to return-to-work options.
