Weeks after thousands, if not tens-of-thousands, of marine life died in a giant Biscayne Bay fish kill, Miami-Dade County commissioners are vowing to take action.
Miami Waterkeeper Dr. Rachel Silverstein recommends stopping sewer leaks, converting septic to sewer systems, storing and treating storm water, and enacting a fertilizer ordinance.
Commissioner Javier Souto agrees in the recommends, but urges a cautious and patient approach to avoid any missteps which could lead to bigger problems.
Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz says they're looking for state and federal funding to help transfer from septic to sewer systems... because it's estimated it will cost each household $7,500.
Miami-Dade County Commissioners recognize the county needs to act.
All agree a healthy Biscayne Bay is essential to South Florida's economy.
