Dixie State University Considering Name Change

A southern Utah university is considering a name change as part of the ongoing nationwide discussion of racist symbolism tied to the Civil War. Officials at Dixie State University say they are in the initial stages of a discussion to drop the word Dixie from the school's name.

The university was founded in 1911 as the St. George Stake Academy and didn't begin using Dixie in its name until two years later.

Supporters of the current name say it has regional connections that have nothing to do with racism or the Civil War. Those who support the change say it could help promote diversity and bring more black students to the campus.
