Cameras that can see you using your cell phone while you drive are being rolled out in Australia.
The cameras being activated in New South Wales are said to be the first of their kind in the world. The cameras can detect a driver who is likely using a cell phone, but the image is verified by a human before any fines are issued. Over the next three years, 45 of the portable cameras will be installed across the Australian state, but there will be no warning signs.
For the first three months of the program, violators will get a warning letter. After that, fines range from $344 to $457.
It could add up to big money for the local government. During a trial of the technology earlier this year, more than 100,000 drivers were caught using a phone while driving.
Under Australian law, using a phone to make or receive calls is legal, but you can't use it to take pictures, video chat, or post on social media while moving.
