Smile! Study Examines Facial Expressions

A new study reveals how we express happiness on our faces.

Researchers at Ohio State University found that of the thousands of possibilities, there are 35 universally accepted facial expressions. Of those, 17 are to express happiness.

Computers analyzed 7.2 million images of facial expressions on people from 31 nations.

While there are 17 expressions for happiness, there are just three for fear, four for surprise, and five each for sadness and anger. The research team found just one facial expression for disgust.
