In that annual reminder that you're old and pop culture is passing you by, the MTV Video Music Awards were held Monday night.
Lizzo had the performance of the night, but top honors went to Taylor Swift. The pop star won the Video of the Year moonman for her LGBTQ anthem "You Need to Calm Down."
Swift's acceptance speech turned political. She called out the White House, noting that a petition supporting the Equality Act has more than enough signatures to warrant an official response. As she delivered the gibe, Swift pretended to check her watch. The Equality Act would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Because of its themes, "You Need to Calm Down" also earned Swift the award for Video for Good.
Another top winner at Monday's awards show was Ariana Grande, who earned the Artist of the Year trophy. Her song "boyfriend" also won the Song of the Summer honor. Song of the Year went to Lil Nas X and Billie Ray Cyrus for "Old Town Road." Billie Eilish collected trophies for Best New Artist and the Push Artist of the Year. Best Collaboration went to Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello for "Senorita." Best Pop went to the Jonas Brothers' "Sucker," while Cardi B's "Money" won for Best Hip Hop.
