Dozens of Miami-Dade firefighters are in Tallahassee this morning trying to meet with the speaker of the House to get some movement on a bill to help firefighters with cancer. The bill requires local governments to issue a 25-thousand dollar cash payment to a firefighter diagnosed with 1 of 21 cancers. Omar Blanco, President of Miami-Dade Firefighters Local 1403, says 67-percent of firefighters deaths are blamed on cancer and 44 other states have this type of legislation. The bill would also make firefighters eligible for disability and death benefits at a rate equivalent to those hurt or killed in the line of duty. Firefighters have been trying to get something passed on the state level for the past 17 years.
