Today’s question comes from Tom - I hope Broward voters are awake this time and won't vote for another tax increase on themselves. One bond to cover a single police station at 100 million? The cost of crime is far less than the cost to prevent crime at that rate. It's like being robbed before you get robbed. These 200 million dollars in bonds would tax all of Broward, and only benefit a specified area of the County.
Bottom Line: Just as I did for Palm Beach County, I’ve used a listener’s note to set up this story. While I don’t endorse political candidates for office, I am willing to weigh in on issues. Specifically, as I’ve recently mentioned, I’m generally not supportive of any effort that requires raising property taxes. At the onset, I want to make it clear that I live in Lake Worth and will only be voting on those specific issues. This only represents my opinion on the ballot questions in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood.
Fort Lauderdale
- Police and Public Safety Bond Issuance: No
Reason: Requires higher property tax assessments.
- Parks and Recreation Bond Issuance: No
Reason: Requires higher property tax assessments.
- Charter Amendment Municipal Elections: Yes
Reason: Moving municipal elections to a general election cycle increases participation and saves taxpayer money.
- Charter Amendment Non-Substantive Changes: Yes
Reason: Modernizes the city charter without a systemic impact on residents.
Hollywood
- General Obligation Bond Issue For City Neighborhoods, Infrastructure, And Resiliency: No
Reason: Requires higher property tax assessments
- General Obligation Bond Issue For City Police and Fire Public Safety Facilities, Technology and Equipment: No
Reason: Requires higher property tax assessments.
