Police in Florida could soon ask you for your registration, insurance and cell phone next time you see a sea of red lights in your rear view mirror. Florida could become one of the first states allowing drivers to use electronic versions of driver's licenses on their cell phones as proof of identification. Republican Representative Jamie Grant of Tampa is sponsoring a digital driver's license bill during the spring session which begins next week. Some critics raising red flags over security concerns, but Grant says they would put protocols in place to update cyber security at the state level to prevent hacking. The digital system would also include the use of personal identification numbers, passwords and or fingerprints to verify licenses on a phone. Grant says the goal is not to replace traditional licenses, but to supplement them. 14 other states are currently developing programs for digital licensing. Currently, every state but New Mexico recognizes electronic copies of insurance cards.
