Broward School Board Approves New Security Measures

The Broward School Board approved Code Red and other safety procedures more than a year after the Parkland massacre.

The new policies require locked classroom doors at all times, clarity on when Code Red should be called and safe spaces in each classroom for students to hide. Under the new policies, staff members must call a Code Red if they see, hear or smell anything that immediately impacts the safety and security of people on campus.

“There are still unanswered questions about how best to identify safe spaces,” said Board member Lori Alhadeff.

There is not a set date on when the new procedures will be implemented.

“Employees still need to be trained on Code Red, we plan to have this taken care of by the end of the school year,” said Superintendent Runcie.

No disciplinary actions will follow if the potential threat turns out to be a false alarm.
