It's that time of year when the cough of a co-worker from across the office is enough to send you running to wash your hands. 

But just how close can you get to someone with a contagious virus and still be "safe"? 

According to the CDC, a person with the flu can infect anyone within a six-foot radius. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

The CDC says the best thing you can do to prevent yourself from getting the flu is to get your flu shot.
