The New York Yankees family is mourning the passing of Joan Steinbrenner, who was married to club owner George Steinbrenner for over 50 years. According to a statement released by the team, Steinbrenner died today at the age of 83, at her home in Tampa.
She married husband George in 1956, and is survived by four children who are all general partners with the Yankees.
From 1973 until his death in 2010, George Steinbrenner was the principal owner and managing partner of the ballclub, the longest such stretch in franchise history.
