Florida will be represented by just one senator in the Federal government for 5 days in January. Governor Rick Scott has announced he will stay in his current role until Ron DeSantis is sworn in on January 8th. The swearing-in for U.S. Senators is January 3rd, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has agreed to hold Scott's swearing in on the 8th just after DeSantis is sworn in as Governor.
Florida's 'resign-to-run' law does not apply since Scott ran for Federal office. Florida saw a similar situation back in 1987 when Governor Bob Graham resigned on January 3 after he was elected to the Senate.
Had Scott resigned before taking office in the Senate, Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera would have assumed the role of Governor for 5 days.
