The “lifelong Republican” who’s more liberal than forty Democrats in the Senate spoke in Boca and media happened. From the Palm Beach Post, Ex Supreme Court Justice: Kavanaugh does not belong on high court.
Excerpt: Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on Thursday said that high court nominee Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, who Stevens once lauded in one of his books, does not belong on the Supreme Court.
Speaking to a crowd of retirees in Boca Raton, Stevens, 98, said Kavanaugh’s performance during a recent Senate confirmation hearing suggested that he lacks the temperament for the job.
Stevens, a lifelong Republican who is known for falling on the liberal side of several judicial rulings, praised Kavanaugh and one of his rulings on a political contribution case in the 2014 book “Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution.”
“At that time, I thought (Kavanaugh) had the qualifications for the Supreme Court should he be selected,” Stevens said. “I’ve changed my views for reasons that have no relationship to his intellectual ability … I feel his performance in the hearings ultimately changed my mind.”
Bottom Line: Credit to the Palm Beach Post for being at least somewhat honest about who he really is by virtue of the characterization, that he is known for falling on the liberal side of judicial rulings. After pulling records from Washington University's School of Law's Supreme Court Database, here's the source you should consider. John Paul Stevens is to Republicans what Supreme Court Justice Steven Breyer is to Republicans.
If that seems odd because Steven Breyer is a San Franciscan liberal Supreme Court Judge, Exactly. The justice that John Paul Stevens most commonly voted with is none other than Breyer. To put a number to it, in ideological split decisions, Stevens was 79% liberal, 21% conservative. He voted to continue recounts in Florida presumably until Gore would win and since leaving office has called for the abolition of the 2nd Amendment. In fact, comparing his partisan break on judicial decisions to Democrats in the US Senate there are currently 40, yes 40, who have more conservative voting records than he did.
Gee, shocking that that guy wouldn’t support Kavanaugh for the court. But he’s a lifelong Republican you know. Right, for about as long as Gerald Ford was President to appoint him.
