One Florida county is changing firefighters' routines in order to decrease their risk of cancer.
Firefighters are nearly 10 percent more likely to develop cancer and 14 percent more likely to die from it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Firefighters' gear is exposed to carcinogens both from chemicals while fighting fires and from diesel fumes from fire engines.
They inhale the harmful vapors and absorb them through their skin.
According to WFTV-TV in Orlando, Orange County is spending more than two million dollars and federal grant money to buy each firefighter a second set of gear so one can be cleaned while the other is used, and installing systems to remove toxic fumes from fire stations.
