Federal prosecutors are expected to announce this morning whether or not they will seek the death penalty for the man accused of killing five people and wounding six others at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
In January 2017, 28-year-old Esteban Santiago allegedly began the mass shooting after retrieving a handgun from checked baggage and loading it in a bathroom.
The Alaska man has pleaded not guilty to a 22-count indictment.
Santiago is being held in the Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami and has been prescribed medication for treatment of schizophrenia.
