Today is Florida Taxpayer Independence Day - the day when, mathematically, we'll actually start keeping the money we earn instead of giving it to the government through taxes.

Florida Tax Watch says it took 111 days to pay our tax burden this year, three days more than last year. The organization chalks that up to increasing federal taxes.

The group also says Floridians will pay more than $250 billion in federal, state, and local taxes this year, $18 billion more than last year. In their estimation, taxes comprise the largest portion of per-day spending for Americans, more than food, housing, and clothing combined.
