It could be a packed house in Homestead Wednesday afternoon as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is set to hold its annual assessment of Turkey Point.

This year's meeting will focus on the plant's current operation, but residents are likely ready to express their opinions on a recently approved plan from the Governor and FPL to add two new nuclear reactors along with miles of new power lines.

Roger Hannah with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says they are currently not making any decisions on that agreement at the moment.

"The NRC does an environmental impact statement that looks at how any new nuclear units would affect the environment and the community surrounding that plant." says Hannah.

He adds they cannot move forward with approval "based on something called an updating of the waste confidence rule," continues Hannah, "and once that process is completed then the commission will begin to look more into earnest at finishing those reviews."

The meeting begins at 1 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott at 2905 NE 9th Street in Homestead, FL.
