Miami-Dade County Commissioners will hold a preliminary vote today on a proposal that would make car services like Uber and Lyft legal.
Commissioner Esteban "Steve" Bovo's plan would require the companies and their drivers to register with the county and cover the cost of background checks.
Their cars must also be no more than five years old and they must have commercial liability insurance.
Uber and Lyft are technically illegal in Miami-Dade, though that hasn't stopped them from operating in the county for more than a month.
Taxi companies have no sympathy for Uber and Lyft, for fear that any competition would devalue their pricey ownership medallions.
