NEW YORK (AP) - The Houston Texans have made South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon (jah-DAY'-vee-ahn) Clowney the first pick in the NFL draft.
Considered a budding NFL star even when he was a freshman, Clowney brings size, speed and power to a Texans lineup that already has 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt.
But his work ethic has been questioned after he slipped from 13 sacks to just three in 2013. Critics said he was protecting himself from injury before declaring early for the draft.
Houston previously made the top pick in two drafts, taking quarterback David Carr in 2002. He never lived up to that billing. They took DE Mario Williams in 2006, but he left for Buffalo in 2012.

We're less than 24 hours away from the start of the NFL Draft as Miami Dolphins fans wait and see how new General Manager Dennis Hickey responds in the war room.
Miami has the 19th overall pick this year, which means their priorities could change before the clock gets rolling for them.
"I still think it's the offensive line." says former Fins player Troy Stradford, "...but I don't think they're going to address that in the 1st round."
Stradford believes this year's draft is deep with offensive linemen, which is on the Dolphins list of priorities.
Miami did make some offseason pickups including free agent tackle Brandon Albert and nose tackle Earl Mitchell.
Miami lost Guard Richie Incognito and Tackle Jonathan Martin following the bullying scandal that rocked the team last season. And the league could still come down on Pro-Bowl Center Mike Pouncey who was specifically named in the Ted Wells bullying report.
There are some other noteworthy things to keep an eye on during this year's draft.
The Houston Texans have the overall #1 pick, and are in desperate need of help at the quarterback position.
Many experts have Texas A&M Q-B Johnny Manziel as #1 overall in their mock drafts.
Missouri Defensive End Michael Sam is also hoping to be a 1st round pick.
He garnered national attention after coming out as gay..
He's looking to become the NFL's first openly gay active player, however many scouts reportedly did not come away impressed with his performance during this year's NFL combine.
