Hurricane season is flood season.

That's the message from the experts, reminding South Floridians that flooding is the nation's number one natural disaster.

National Hurricane Center Director Richard Knabb says tropical storms are not just about wind and says water poses the biggest threat to life and property in the event of a storm.

"Historically, most of the fatalities, most of the impact, most of the damage of the last few years is due to water," said Knabb.

In fact, he says, most evacuations are ordered because of storm surge risk and not the potential for wind damage.

Knabb reminds everyone to make sure to have a flood insurance policy in addition to regular windstorm coverage.

Flood insurance experts say policies cost just a few hundred dollars, but considering the average payout is $35,000, the recommend it as a worthy investment.
