It has been 8 years since Fidel Castro handed power of the communist island over to his brother Raul.

Fidel took power in a 1959 revolution, leading Cuba for 48 years before getting sick in July 2006.

He stepped down in July of 2007, delegating his presidential duties to his brother in what the state media called a temporary measure.

Raul officially took power two years later and has led Cuba ever since.

Fidel nearly died in 2006 after having to go through multiple abdominal surgeries and reportedly having part of his colon removed.

The US Government maintains a tight embargo against the Cuban Government.
