Broward County has teamed up with Chevron Energy Solutions in a waste-to-energy project.

That means substances known as "urban waste," which include fats, oils, and grease, will be used to generate electricity.

The groundbreaking event at the county's Pompano Beach wastewater facility took place Thursday morning.

The energy produced there is meant to offset utility-purchased power and help with carbon reduction, too.

The project is supposed to generate almost two Megawatts of power, reduce electricity usage by 30 percent, and save the county 27 million dollars over the next 17 years.
