The dream of a Major League Soccer stadium at PortMiami appears to be fizzling out.

David Beckham's group is shifting its preferred site for a 25,000 seat soccer stadium from the southwest corner of PortMiami to the FEC boat slip in Downtown Miami adjacent to Museum Park American Airlines Arena.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado had been making a strong push for the boat slip site recently.

The slip location is mostly underwater. Beckham has said in the past that he would have no problem paying the roughly $18 million it would cost to fill the slip. The Beckham group has long pledged the stadium will be privately-funded, although it did apply for a state sales tax rebate.

Since the new site is owned by the city of Miami, it will likely go to a referendum in August or November.
