Homeless Awareness Day comes around once a year, but homelessness is a year-round problem.  Hundreds of people are participating in events around South Florida Thursday.  Participating stores will have fundraising events and some schools have special activities in store for students.

Ron Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, says the goal of the day is to raise awareness in an effort to win the fight against homelessness.  According to Book, over the past two decades the number of people sleeping on the streets in South Florida has gone from 8,000 people to just 1,000.  He attributes those numbers to public education.
